The root system of macadamia is a typical fibrous root system, the main root is underdeveloped, and the lateral roots are huge. When the seed germinates, a main root is produced, and then lateral roots grow. The fibrous roots grow in clusters around the root of the upper branch, usually at the same time as the upper branch. The fibrous roots are 1-4 cm long and have long root hairs. The root hairs are short-lived and fall off after about 3 months. Fibrous roots cannot grow secondary. Macadamia roots are distributed vertically within 70cm of the surface, of which 70% of the roots are concentrated in the soil of 0-30cm, 98% of the roots are distributed in the soil of 0-50cm, and the vast majority of the horizontal distribution is within the crown range.
